High-Level Consultation Reviews Progress of Ethiopia's Electronic Government Procurement (e-GP) System

(August 6, 2026) Addis Ababa, The Federal Public Procurement and Property Authority (FPPA) held a high-level consultation with the World Bank to review the progress, performance, and future direction of Ethiopia's Electronic Government Procurement (e-GP) System.
Opening the meeting, FPPA Director General H.E. Meseret Meskele welcomed the World Bank delegation led by Dr. Rajesh and expressed appreciation for the Bank's continued technical support and longstanding partnership in advancing Ethiopia's public procurement reforms.
During the meeting, Mr. Yafet Mekonnen, e-GP Project Manager, presented the current status of the system, highlighting its growing contribution to transparency, efficiency, and accountability in public procurement. He noted that more than 50,000 procurement opportunities have been published through the e-GP platform, facilitating public procurement transactions exceeding ETB 597.6 billion. He also emphasized the Authority's ongoing efforts to integrate Sustainable Public Procurement (SPP) principles into government procurement.
The discussion also reviewed key implementation challenges, including infrastructure limitations, budget constraints, supplier readiness, and capacity gaps, together with the measures being undertaken to address them through capacity-building, change management initiatives, stakeholder engagement, and continued investment in digital infrastructure.
Dr. Rajesh commended the significant progress Ethiopia has made in implementing the e-GP system and acknowledged the Authority's commitment to modernizing public procurement. He also provided recommendations for the next phase of the reform, including strengthening market price intelligence, introducing reverse auction mechanisms where appropriate, improving procurement planning and timelines, leveraging Artificial Intelligence, and enhancing user-focused system improvements.
The consultation reaffirmed the strong partnership between FPPA and the World Bank and their shared commitment to building a modern, transparent, efficient, and technology-driven public procurement system that supports Ethiopia's sustainable development agenda.
